Baltimore County Agricultural Studies

Agricultural Study Updates
Funding is needed to complete a study that Identifies Top Initiatives to Improve the Viability of our Local Agriculture.  Local Community Agricultural Leaders, the U of MD Extension Office, NCP, and Baltimore County staff are launching a study to provide a road map of priority initiatives that can improve the profitability of Baltimore County’s agricultural industry.

The goals are to:
•       Increase the sustainability of farming in the future,
•       Revitalize downstream and upstream local food and crop related businesses,
•       Provide a local source of agricultural products to the larger Baltimore Region,
•       And influence the land use issues in the rural sector that in turn impact water quality and public water supplies for 1.8 million urban and suburban residents.

Leading producers in Baltimore County’s major agricultural segments will serve on an Advisory Board to ensure recommendations are actionable.  NCP will be providing project management and logistical support.

The project is estimated to cost $61,000.  Thanks to support from Baltimore County’s Agricultural Land Preservation Advisory Board, Baltimore County Farm Bureau, Mid Atlantic Farm Credit, County and State grants, North County Preservation, and private donors, over half the funding has been secured. Additional funding to complete the study is required.  Any and all input from the agricultural and wider community is welcomed and encouraged.

If you are interested in getting involved, please email Alice Chalmers or call (443) 243-2998.

Important - Hereford Zone Parents
Hereford High School is unique in its ability to offer your child a large number of honors and AP classes as well as fundamentals in Agricultural Education. Hereford is unique in also providing Ag Education, which today advances your child's knowledge in the fields of Math, Biology, Technology and Physics, and prepares children to the challenges of Agriculture in the 21st century. Please write to Principal Bereska to ask him to support Ag Education and make Hereford High the Best Practice School in this field that it used to be. Now a new opportunity is on the horizon for The CASE program (Curriculum of Agricultural Science Education), which is being developed, and pilot tested in ten states, of which Maryland is one. The goal is to further advance high academic standards in agriculture education. A Baltimore County school will be chosen to participate in the pilot test program. Interested parents can help bring this new program to Hereford High by writing to Principal Bereska.
